Welcome to Dem Man Say

What a joke. An island filled with history and beauty. Yet so many of our resources are neglected and wasted by those that benefit most from the islands' resources. Crazy part is much of the filth can be attributed to wealthy and privileged families and business owners. Families and individuals that reap all the rewards of power and privilege while allowing the ruin of their fellow human beings.

So while these privileged few enjoy the life of ease and wealth, they've pulled the ladder up behind them. Letting our communities rot.

Our Work

The Abandoned

Historic structures that date back 200 years are left to rot. Their walls once told the story of our islands and people. Now they're home to human feces, rats and garbage.

This is thanks to wealthy families happy to collect rents without putting in any money. Or because the family is already too rich to care about some of their "less-desirable" properties.

The Neglected

The homes of mothers, children and our most vulnerable citizens are barely livable. The landlords are absentee or just don't care. They care about the rent and care nothing of the residents.

Why do we allow our women and children to live slightly (by the smallest of margins) better than animals.

Church Property

Churches were (unfortunately this is no longer the case) some of the most powerful and influential institutions in shaping the hearts and minds of its people. Here in St. Thomas congregations date back hundreds of years - some of the oldest in the New World.

The churches have not only lost much of their hold on their members (hello crime, disunity, discord and broken homes), they have also allowed many of their buildings, for which they are custodians, to fall into disrepair, disuse and disrepair.

Government Stupidity

The government, whose main job is for the care of our citizens, allows many of its own properties to disintegrate and become open-air drug dens and garbage dumps.

Instead of using the massive amounts of federal grants and local taxes given to them, they spend their money on new construction projects. Building shiny, new structures while these cultural treasures fade and crumble from existence.

Piss, stale beer and body odor. Condoms, beer bottles, diapers and food wrappers.

Our "cherished" public spaces and parks are open-air garbage dumps. Spaces that should be safe and clean and enjoyed by all. One of our parks is known affectionately as "stinky park" because of the fetid smells. Be sure to check your shoes after you walk through.

Businesses

Many businesses own and/or operate in structures that would be better off shuttered. If the health department and zoning were able to do their jobs, half these places would be shut down. But the businesses get to continue operating and making money, while the community has to

Who are we?

Dem Man Say is here to shine a little light in the dark, stinky places that we all either live in or walk past holding our nose.

If you have an example of a property or particularly troubling (disgusting) site here on-island please share and we'll make sure to illuminate.
